Compare Canon CLI-42 and CLI-65 ink tanks: compatibility, cost, and performance. Find out which ink tank fits your printer and print needs.
Quick Answer
Choose the Canon CLI-42 ink tank pack if you own a compatible PIXMA Pro printer and want full-color printing; choose the Canon CLI-65 Photo Magenta tank if you have a compatible PIXMA printer and need to replace a specific photo color.
Compatibility: Not All Canon Ink Tanks Are Interchangeable
Canon designs each ink tank series for specific printer models. The CLI-42 and CLI-65 tanks are not interchangeable, even though both are used in Canon PIXMA printers. Using the wrong tank can lead to poor print quality or printer errors, so always check your printer model before buying.
The CLI-42 series is typically used in PIXMA Pro models, which are designed for professional photo printing. The CLI-65 series is found in standard PIXMA photo printers, which are more common for home and enthusiast use.
Cost and Value: Buying in Bulk vs. Replacing a Single Color
The CLI-42 Eight-Color Ink Tank Pack includes all eight colors you need for a full set, which is convenient and often more economical than buying individual tanks. The pack is priced at $99.39, with a catalog comparison price of $141.99, so you save about $42.59 compared to buying each tank separately.
The CLI-65 Photo Magenta tank is sold individually at $9.75, with a catalog comparison price of $15.99. This is ideal if you only need to replace one color, especially if other tanks still have ink. However, if you need multiple colors, buying individual tanks can add up quickly.
Print Quality: Why Photo Magenta Matters
Photo Magenta is a specialized color used in photo printing to achieve accurate skin tones and vibrant reds and purples. The CLI-65 Photo Magenta tank is designed for printers that use this color, and replacing it with a standard magenta can degrade print quality.
The CLI-42 pack includes all eight colors, including photo-specific inks, ensuring consistent color output across your prints. If you print photos regularly, having a full set of compatible inks is essential for maintaining color accuracy.
Decision Rules: Choosing Between CLI-42 and CLI-65
- Check your printer model: Look up your Canon PIXMA printer model in the manual or on the Canon website to see which ink tank series it uses. Do not guess based on the printer's appearance. Write down your printer model number before shopping.
- If your printer uses CLI-42: Buy the CLI-42 Eight-Color Ink Tank Pack if you need a full set of colors. This is the most convenient and cost-effective option for regular photo printing. Consider stocking a spare pack if you print often.
- If your printer uses CLI-65: Buy the CLI-65 Photo Magenta tank if you only need to replace that specific color. For other colors, look for the corresponding CLI-65 tanks individually. Check the ink levels on all tanks to see if you need more than one replacement.
