Clean an APS-C Sensor Safely: Swabs, Solution and Lens Pen

Category: How-to Guides
A practical walkthrough for APS-C sensor cleaning: when a lens pen is enough, how swabs and solution fit in, and how to avoid turning dust spots into scratches.
Start by confirming the dust is on the sensor
Dust spots on photos usually appear as small dark blobs in the same place every frame, especially against plain backgrounds like sky or walls. Before you touch the sensor, switch lenses and take a test shot at a small aperture. If the spot stays put, it is likely on the sensor or low-pass filter. If it moves or disappears, the problem may be on the lens or mirror. This check saves you from cleaning the wrong surface.
For APS-C cameras, use swabs sized for the sensor format. The VSGO Sensor Cleaning Swabs for APS-C Cameras are 16mm wide and come 12 to a pack, which matches the smaller sensor area and gives you spares for repeat passes.
APS-C swab basics
- VSGO Sensor Cleaning Swabs for APS-C Cameras: 12 swabs per pack, each 16mm wide, designed for APS-C format sensors. Correct width matters: a full-frame swab can be too wide for an APS-C chamber, and too few swabs force you to reuse a dirty one.

Work in the right order: blower, then swab, then pen
- 1. Try a blower first: Use a rocket-style blower to remove loose dust before any contact. This step is not in the supplied product records, but it is standard practice and reduces the chance of dragging grit across the sensor.
- 2. Use a swab only if dust remains: If the blower leaves spots, move to a wet swab. The VSGO APS-C swabs are the correct size for the job. Follow the swab maker's instructions for solution and stroke direction; the supplied records do not include a full procedure, so check the packaging.
- 3. Reserve the lens pen for lenses and edges: A lens pen is for optical glass, not the bare sensor. The VSGO Power-Switch Lens Pen (model V-P03E) is a lens cleaning pen; use it on the lens front element or viewfinder, not inside the mirror box.
When to use a lens pen (and when not to)
A lens pen is handy for fingerprints and smudges on the front or rear lens element, and for cleaning the eyepiece. It is not a sensor swab. The VSGO Power-Switch Lens Pen is listed as a lens cleaning pen, and the supplied record does not describe sensor contact. Keep it for glass surfaces and use dedicated swabs for the sensor.
If you are already doing a sensor cleaning session, clean the lens first with the pen, then move to the sensor with swabs. That order keeps lens oil away from the sensor chamber.

Solution refills: what they do and what they don't
Wet cleaning needs a solution matched to the swab and the sensor. The Delkin Devices SensorScope SensorSolution Refill Bottle (0.25 oz) is a refill for the Sensor Scope system and is intended to be used with Sensor Safe Wands. The supplied record describes it as streak-free, low-residue, non-conductive, alcohol-free and air-travel friendly. It does not state that it is compatible with every swab brand, so do not assume it works with the VSGO swabs without checking the label or the manufacturer's guidance.
If you already own a Sensor Scope kit, this refill keeps you supplied. If you are starting fresh with VSGO swabs, follow the solution recommendation that comes with those swabs.
Refill details
- Delkin Devices SensorScope SensorSolution Refill Bottle (0.25 oz): 0.25 oz refill bottle of Sensor Solution; a supplement to the complete Sensor Scope Camera Sensor Cleaning System (sold separately). It is a refill, not a standalone kit, and the supplied record ties it to Sensor Safe Wands.
Checkpoints before you touch the sensor
- Camera power off and battery removed: This is standard safety practice; the supplied records do not include a procedure, so follow your camera manual.
- Use a fresh swab for each pass: The VSGO pack gives you 12 swabs, so you can use a clean one per attempt and avoid reusing a contaminated swab.
- Do not apply solution directly to the sensor: Apply solution to the swab according to the solution and swab instructions. The supplied records do not specify a dose, so do not guess.
- Work in a clean, still space: Avoid drafts and dusty rooms. This is general practice, not a manufacturer instruction.
What the listings do not tell you
The supplied records for the VSGO swabs and the Delkin refill do not include step-by-step stroke directions, drying times or solution quantities. Treat any such numbers as unknown until you read the packaging or the manufacturer's documentation. The lens pen record likewise does not describe sensor use. When a detail is missing, the safe choice is to stop and check rather than invent a procedure.
After cleaning, take another test shot at a small aperture. If spots remain, repeat with a fresh swab only after confirming your technique against the supplied instructions. If spots persist, consider professional service rather than repeated wet cleaning.
