Nikon EN-EL25 vs ProMaster USB-C Battery Comparison

Quick answer

For most Nikon Z shooters, the ProMaster USB-C EN-EL25 offers more convenient charging and a lower price than the original Nikon EN-EL25, but the Nikon battery may provide slightly longer runtime per charge depending on your usage.

Charging convenience: USB-C vs dedicated charger

The ProMaster USB-C EN-EL25 lets you charge directly via a USB-C cable, which is a major advantage if you travel light or already carry USB-C chargers for other devices. The original Nikon EN-EL25 requires a dedicated battery charger or in-camera charging via the camera's USB port, which may be slower and ties up your camera during charging.

If you often shoot in the field without access to wall outlets, the ProMaster's USB-C compatibility means you can top up from a power bank or laptop. This flexibility can be a game-changer for extended shoots or travel photography.

Price and value

The ProMaster USB-C EN-EL25 is priced at USD 51.76 (catalog comparison price USD 69.95), making it a more budget-friendly option than the official Nikon EN-EL25, which typically retails for a higher price. For photographers who need multiple spare batteries, the savings add up quickly.

However, price isn't everything. The Nikon battery is designed specifically for Nikon Z cameras and may offer slightly more consistent power delivery and longer overall lifespan in some conditions. If you're a professional shooting critical events, the peace of mind from an OEM battery might be worth the extra cost.

Performance and compatibility

Both batteries share the same 7.6V voltage and 1280mAh capacity, so they should provide similar runtime in most Nikon Z cameras. The ProMaster battery is compatible with Nikon Z50, Z30, Zfc, and other models that use the EN-EL25 form factor.

One trade-off: third-party batteries like the ProMaster may not communicate battery health data to the camera as accurately as the Nikon original. This means your camera's battery percentage indicator might be less precise, especially as the battery ages. For casual shooters, this is rarely an issue, but if you rely on exact battery level readouts, the Nikon EN-EL25 is a safer bet.

Trade-offs at a glance

• Charging method: ProMaster: USB-C direct charging (faster, more flexible). Nikon: dedicated charger or in-camera USB (slower, ties up camera).
• Price: ProMaster: USD 51.76 (catalog comparison price USD 69.95). Nikon: higher retail price. ProMaster saves money, especially when buying multiple spares.
• Battery health reporting: Nikon EN-EL25: accurate battery level communication. ProMaster: may show less precise percentage as battery ages. If exact battery readout matters for your workflow, stick with the Nikon original.
