Westcott 2030-DP Deflector Plate: What It Does for Rapid Box

Quick answer

Buy the Westcott 2030-DP Deflector Plate if you already own a Rapid Box and want to control light spill or soften output without changing your main modifier. Skip it if you need broader coverage or haven't confirmed compatibility with your specific Rapid Box model.

What a deflector plate actually changes in a Rapid Box

A deflector plate sits inside or in front of the softbox to redirect light that would otherwise travel straight out. In a Rapid Box, that means less harsh center hotspot and more even falloff toward the edges. It does not increase power or change color temperature; it only alters spread and softness.

Because the plate blocks some direct light, expect a slight drop in effective output. That trade-off is usually worth it for portraits or product shots where you want gentler transitions, but it can be a problem if you're already shooting at maximum flash power.

Compatibility is not universal across Rapid Box models

Westcott makes several Rapid Box sizes and shapes, and the 2030-DP is designed for specific models. The product listing does not supply a compatibility list, so check your Rapid Box model number against Westcott's documentation before ordering. If your model isn't listed, the plate may not mount securely or may not sit at the intended distance from the diffuser.

This is a case where the absence of a universal fit is a real decision limitation: you cannot assume it works with every Rapid Box just because it's a Westcott accessory.

When the deflector plate is the right add-on

If you already use a Rapid Box for portraits and find the light too directional or the center too bright, the deflector plate is a low-cost way to test a softer look before investing in a different modifier. It's also useful when you want to reduce spill onto a background without moving the light farther away.

At a catalog price of USD 12.97 (compared to USD 19.95), it's an inexpensive experiment. But if you need a dramatic change in light quality, a different softbox size or a grid will likely do more.

Decision rules for buying the 2030-DP

• Check your Rapid Box model first: Look up your exact Rapid Box model number and confirm the 2030-DP is listed as compatible. If you can't find a clear match, don't buy it. Compatibility is the first gate; price doesn't matter if it won't fit.
• Match the plate to your lighting goal: Choose the deflector if you want to soften center intensity or reduce spill. Skip it if you need maximum output or a wider spread. The plate trades some brightness for control; decide which you need more.
• Consider your existing modifier collection: If you already own grids, diffusers, or other Rapid Box accessories that solve the same problem, the deflector may be redundant. Buy it only if you lack a way to shape light without changing the whole setup. Avoid duplicating tools you already have.
