Vivitar 55mm 2.2x Telephoto Lens

The Vivitar 55mm 2.2x Telephoto Lens is a screw-on auxiliary telephoto attachment designed to increase the effective focal length of a compatible camera or camcorder lens featuring a 55mm filter thread, offering an affordable way to gain additional telephoto reach without needing to purchase a separate dedicated telephoto lens. Its 2.2x magnification factor provides a substantial boost in reach when attached to a compatible lens.

This type of attachment lens works by threading directly onto the front filter threads of an existing lens, optically extending its effective focal length to bring distant subjects closer, making it a popular accessory for photographers and videographers who wanted extra telephoto capability using a lens or camera they already owned. This made it especially useful for camcorders and fixed-lens cameras that lacked interchangeable lens options.

Because attachment lenses like this rely on the optical quality of an additional glass element placed in front of the primary lens, they typically involve some trade-off in overall sharpness and edge performance compared to a purpose-built telephoto lens, though they remain a practical and budget-friendly solution for casual telephoto shooting needs such as distant subjects, wildlife observation, and event photography from farther away.

Compact and lightweight, the attachment lens is easy to carry and quickly attach or remove as needed, making it a convenient accessory for photographers and videographers who occasionally need extra telephoto reach without committing to a full lens change or additional investment in dedicated telephoto optics. Its 55mm thread size makes it compatible with any lens or camcorder sharing this common filter size.
