Sony a6700 Mirrorless Camera

The Sony a6700 is an APS-C mirrorless camera positioned at the top of Sony’s a6000-series lineup, combining a newer high-resolution sensor with advanced autofocus and video features borrowed from Sony’s full-frame bodies. It’s aimed at enthusiast and prosumer photographers and videographers who want strong stills performance alongside a substantial step up in video capability compared to earlier a6000-series cameras.

At the core of the a6700 is a 26MP APS-C back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with Sony’s BIONZ XR processor, the same processing engine found in Sony’s full-frame flagship bodies, delivering detailed stills, strong dynamic range, and improved processing speed over previous APS-C Sony cameras. The camera includes 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS), helping counteract camera shake and enabling sharper handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds across both stills and video.

Autofocus is a major focus of the a6700’s design, powered by Sony’s AI-based subject recognition processing unit, which improves detection and tracking of humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes. This is paired with real-time Eye AF and real-time tracking, giving photographers reliable subject acquisition across a wide range of subjects without needing to manually switch detection modes for each. Continuous shooting tops out at 11fps with full AF/AE tracking, giving the camera solid speed for casual sports, wildlife, and everyday action.

Video capability is substantially expanded compared to earlier a6000-series bodies, with the a6700 capable of recording 4K video up to 120fps in Sony’s proxy or cropped modes, alongside oversampled 4K up to 60p from 6K capture for strong detail retention. The camera also supports S-Cinetone color profiles, previously reserved for Sony’s higher-end cinema and full-frame cameras, along with focus breathing compensation for smoother focus transitions during video recording.

Handling centers on a fully articulating touchscreen LCD, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, and a body design that adds a dedicated dial for switching between stills, video, and S&Q (slow and quick motion) modes, streamlining the process of moving between shooting styles. The camera includes a weather-resistant magnesium alloy chassis, dual SD card slots (UHS-II compatible), and both microphone and headphone jacks for video-focused audio monitoring and input.

The a6700 uses Sony’s E-mount lens system, giving it access to Sony’s full range of native APS-C and full-frame E-mount lenses, along with third-party E-mount options. Connectivity includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless image transfer and remote control via Sony’s companion app.
