The Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital ELPH (also sold internationally as the Digital IXUS 40 and IXY DIGITAL 50) is an ultra-compact point-and-shoot camera announced in late 2004, positioned at the time as the smallest, slimmest, and most powerful ELPH camera Canon had released. It’s aimed at everyday photographers who want a genuinely pocketable camera without sacrificing image quality or usability.

At the core of the SD300 is a 4.0-megapixel sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC II Image Processor, the first PowerShot to incorporate this engine, the same processing architecture used in Canon’s professional EOS-1D Mark II at the time, delivering notably faster startup, autofocus, and playback along with more vibrant color rendering compared to earlier ELPH models. The lens is a UA (Ultra-high Refractive Index Glass-Molded Aspherical) design with a 5.8-17mm focal length (35-105mm 35mm-equivalent) and a variable maximum aperture of f/2.8-4.9, offering a 3x optical zoom in a notably smaller housing than the 2x zoom lenses found in previous ELPH generations.

Handling centers on a 2.0-inch LCD screen for image preview and playback, along with a Print/Share button for one-touch direct printing or downloading to a compatible printer or computer. New Scene Modes were introduced with this generation, including a Digital Macro Mode for close-up shooting. Video capability includes a Fast Frame Rate Movie mode recording at 60 frames per second at 320×240 resolution, notable at the time for its ability to capture fast-moving subjects with smoother motion than standard-speed video.

Build quality reflects the ELPH line’s signature ultra-slim, stylish metal body design, keeping the camera compact enough to fit easily in a pocket. The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and stores images on a CompactFlash or SD-type memory card depending on configuration.

Evelyn ★★★★★

I’ve been hunting for a compact digital ELPH for ages, and this SD300’s pocket-friendly size is exactly what I wanted. For an untested unit, the body is in surprisingly clean shape—no scratches or dents at all.

Grace G. ★★★★★

Even though it's sold as-is and untested, this little ELPH feels solid and the lens retracts smoothly. The compact metal body is exactly what I wanted for throwing in a bag. No batteries included, but that was clearly stated.

Owen G. ★★★★★

I love the compact size of this ELPH model—it fits perfectly in my jacket pocket for daily carry. The metal body feels sturdy despite being untested, and the 3x optical zoom lens looks clean and intact.
