The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P30 is an early ultra-compact point-and-shoot digital camera announced in February 2001, positioned in Sony’s P-series lineup as a slim, PC-friendly camera aimed at everyday users wanting straightforward digital photography. It combines a compact body with Sony’s Memory Stick storage system, reflecting the design priorities of digital compacts from the early 2000s.

At the core of the DSC-P30 is a 1.3-megapixel, 1/2.7-inch CCD sensor, delivering a maximum image resolution of 1280×960 pixels. The camera offers a 3.0x optical zoom lens paired with an additional 2.0x digital zoom, giving photographers some framing flexibility for a compact camera of its era. Images are stored on Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick format, with a 4MB Memory Stick included as standard.

A notable feature of the DSC-P30 is its power efficiency: rather than requiring four AA batteries like many contemporaneous digital cameras, it operates on just two AA cells, offering up to 60 minutes of continuous operation or approximately 1,100 shots per set, allowing for a smaller, more compact camera body than competitors with higher battery demands.

Build quality reflects Sony’s early Cyber-shot design philosophy, emphasizing a slim, pocketable metal body that was notably compact for its time, making it an easy camera to carry for casual, everyday snapshot photography. The camera connects to a PC for image transfer, consistent with the broader Cyber-shot lineup’s emphasis on computer compatibility at the time of its release.
